Followspot Operator

Followspot operators are expected to control followspots, highlighting specific members of the cast at required times during the show. Generally it is only the more complex shows that use followspots, and so you can expect to be given a cue sheet detailing precisely what effect is needed, and to be cued by the Deputy Stage Manager. However, in some smaller venues, you may have to cue yourself from notes in a script.

Show-specific variations

Followspotting can vary between tracking a principal cast member in a complex dance sequence, to simply highlighting largely static actors, but can in general be done by anybody without knowledge of the specific show, as long as an accurate, well-written cue sheet exists. However, in cases where the followspot requirements are particularly complex, the Lighting Designer may choose to operate the followspot themselves.
