Charley's Aunt

Charley’s Aunt, a classic and evergreen farce, written by Brandon Thomas, was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Bury St. Edmunds on 29 February 1892. It then broke all historic records for plays of any kind, at the time, with an original London run of 1,466 performances!

Our revival is set in a Cambridge College in 1892. The imminent visit of Charles Wykeham’s aunt from Brazil, Donna Lucia, provides an opportunity for students, Charles and Jack to invite their young ladies to their rooms, using the aunt as a chaperone. When a telegram arrives postponing the aunt’s visit, they persuade their fellow student Lord Babberley (Babbs) to be their required chaperone by impersonating the aunt. Here the fun begins; Babbs thoroughly enjoys being kissed by the girls and receiving their confidences, but finds his ingenuity severely taxed when the real Donna Lucia arrives! Fortunately, a series of misunderstandings and farcical scrapes lead towards a happy ending for all.
