Twelfth Night
Saturday 8 December 2012, 14:30
Twelfth Night is arguably Shakespeare's most loved comedy.
The play's title sets it firmly in the pagan festival of mis-rule, where reality is turned on its head; where the impossible love that Viola, disguised as a man, bears for Orsino and Olivia bears for Viola (believing her male) vies with Orsino's unrequited love for Olivia. The discovery that Sebastian, Viola's twin brother, is not drowned allows impossible love to be changed in an instant, ending the period of misrule, so that all four characters can be happily united.
Typically Shakespeare's comedy is laced with darker tones in the baiting of Malvolio and Belch's disregard for Aguecheek, but these serve the riotous elements of the comedy well and the letter scene is possibly the most loved comic device. The sub-title 'Or What You Will' allows us to see the play as a holiday season romp.
Simply staged in period dress, Twelfth Night should indeed be a pre-Christmas treat.
